In "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, the windmill is an important symbol. It initially represents the animals' hope for a better life and progress through technological improvement, as they believe it will bring them more comfort and ease their workload. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes a symbol of the pigs' manipulation and corruption. The pigs use the construction and maintenance of the windmill as a means to control the other animals and justify their own privileged position, diverting resources and labor for their own benefit while the other animals toil endlessly. This shows how a seemingly positive symbol can be twisted and exploited, reflecting the corrupting nature of power.
Another example is the river in "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway. The river symbolizes the passage of time and the inevitability of change. It is constantly flowing, just as the lives of the characters are constantly moving forward, facing the uncertainties and tragedies of war.
