A few days ago was the Winter Solstice of the 24 solar terms in China. As a native of northern Jiangsu, I always thought that the Winter Solstice was the day to eat dumplings, because I remember a legend in my mind that “on the Winter Solstice, dumplings bowls were not served and no one cared about them when their ears were frozen off.”I still remember in my childhood, on the Winter Solstice, the family gathered around the table to eat dumplings, the whole room was enveloped with joy and warmth.

So,on the day of the Winter Solstice,I excitedly asked my classmate,“Do you eat dumplings?”However, she looked at me in confusion.“Why...Why eat dumplings?”She replied me curiously. In an instant, I was stunned. We chattered casually while all the time I was wondering what do they eat on the Winter Solstice day.“We always eat rice dumplings on the Winter Solstice .”She said to me with a smile.Gradually,I knew that she comes from the southern region and their custom is to eat rice dumplings on the Winter Solstice. Moreover,I learned that there is a habit of eating lamb during the Winter Solstice in the Yunnan,Guizhou,Sichuan,Chongqing region.I was astonished about it.

At this moment, I realized that the cultural differences in food between the north and south.I reflected on it further,we all tend to regard as the center that special place where we are known, where we known others, but in fact, culture is diverse,we should respect cultural diversity and seek common ground while reserving differences.

In China, all of us know some traditional festivals. For example, New Year, Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid Autumn Festival, and Double Ninth Festival. But, in my memory, my favorite festival is the Mid Autumn Festival.

In my childhood, every time we had the perfect time at the Mid Autumn Festival, we always had fun. We ate moon cake, enjoyed the moon, played with lanterns, enjoyed the beauty of osmanthus, and drank some osmanthus wine. What impressed me most was the progress I made moon cakes with my grandmother. Grandmother used her hands which were full of calluses to rub the dough hard to make it softer. But she has her secret recipe like magic which can make moon cakes very delicious. She usually picks up a piece of dough, then puts a spoonful of delicious and magical filling, then skillfully packs them, and finally prints a beautiful pattern, so that a mooncake is made.

At that time, I asked my grandmother why to eat moon cakes, grandma picked up a moon cake and said, with a smile,” The round moon cakes symbolize family reunion and happiness, which have been our Chinese culture since ancient times. “She patted me on the head and then handed me a round moon cake.

The Mid-Autumn Festival originated in ancient times, was popularized in the Han Dynasty, finalized in the Tang Dynasty, and prevailed after the Song Dynasty. The Mid-Autumn Festival with a full moon to symbolize the reunion, for the sustenance of missing homes, and missing loved ones, is a precious cultural heritage in China.

The custom has continued over time. Although the moon cake does not have the past taste, the festival still exists. This is the spirit and crystallization of the ancient Chinese people, not only a good blessing for home and reunion but also the spread of Chinese culture from generation to generation.

                                                                                    Chinese knots

When I was a child,my mother bought some Chinese knots one day. I looked at them. They were red and beautiful. I asked my mom what this is with curiosity, my mother smiled and said these were Chinese knots. Then my mom began to tell the origin and meaning of the Chinese knots.

Chinese knots are a type of intricate and decorative knotting technique. The knots are traditionally made using a single piece of cord or thread. In Chinese, the knot means vigor, harmony and unification. Therefore, this unique Chinese knot artwork has been a popular gift for thousands of years and embodies the best wishes.

After my mother had finished talking about this, I wanted my mother to buy some materials. I said to my mother, "Mom, I want to try to make a Chinese knot by myself." Mom nodded and agreed. After we prepared the material, we started to do it according to the tutorial on the Internet.I followed the information on the Internet step by step, and the beginning was quite smooth, and I was somewhat proud of it and thought the Chinese knot was so simple. However, after countless twists, turns and threads, I still didn't make it.I tried to wrap the red rope back, but I failed.I threw the shapeless thread ball on the table,my heart added a bit of frustration. I wanted to give up.My mother saw this, gently patted me, smiled, comforted me and said, "Do more to be skilled. Practice makes perfect."Hearing this,I decided to try again. Finally, my first Chinese knot was completed with great difficulty.

Since then, I began to understand that it is not easy to make Chinese knots. In addition to its auspicious meaning and popularity, Chinese knot also has rich cultural connotations. Because of its age, its history has been throughout the human race. The long cultural accumulation of Chinese knot can be said that it is a historical and cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. It has also gone out into the world to let more people know about traditional Chinese culture. At the same time, I had a more profound understanding of the charm of traditional Chinese culture and the difficulties of inheritance.Nowadays, more and more young people begin to learn traditional crafts. What we can do is to understand the long history of Chinese civilization, perceive the breadth and depth of Chinese culture, and pass it on well not only in material form, but also in our hearts.

At that time, I was still in primary school, and it was the kite-flying season. During recess, students were flying around the playground with their own kites, trying different ways to put them into the air. At that time, I did not have my own kite, I can only follow behind my classmates to help their kites"adjust posture", in order to put their kites into the blue sky. That day after school, my grandfather came to pick me up from school. I told him I also want a kite." Of course. Let's go buy one.” Grandfather said without a doubt. l excitedly went to the side of the stall and started selecting carefully. My mouth kept talking about the shortcomings of these kites. This kite doesn't fly high, this kite doesn't fly well, this kite is ugly... Standing there for a long time, I did not pick out a satisfactory kite. Grandpa couldn't stand it anymore and said, "Babe, we can go back and I will make a kite for you by myself. It is not only easy to fly to the sky, but also high.” My eyes lit up with excitement and I said, “You can make a kite? Really? Then you can make one for me. Go! Go home. Go home and do it now!”

Back at home, grandpa took out all the treasures at the bottom of his box, bamboo strips, string, and paper for making kites. Just when I thought we had everything ready, Grandpa shook his hand. Grandpa said meaningfully, “there was one more heavy ingredient. That’s batter.” I don't understand why grandpa need batter to make a kite. Grandpa did not tell me directly, but asked me to watch it carefully. Grandpa first set up the frame of the kite, fixed the bamboo strips with string, and then pasted the kite paper on the already shaped bamboo strips. That's where the batter came in. Grandpa put batter on one edge of the kite paper, and then wrapped it around the bamboo on both sides. "Do you knew what the batter was for?" My grandpa asked patiently." It was glue." I replied with pride. But then I asked, "why we didn't just use glue directly." " Batter was glue when I was kids. I think it was a good ingredient to stick things together." My grandpa explained patiently. The next day I went to school with a kite that my grandpa had made by hand. My kite is not only easy to fly in the sky, but also fly the highest.

Batter or glue, they are just tools used to stick things in different time. Maybe it is not common to stick things with batter now, but it is undeniable that it was used to stick things in the past. Such as spring couplets, Chinese cutting, kites and so on. They were all glued with batter in the past. Maybe this is the change between two generations, and I happen to be lucky enough to witness this change. The Times keep moving forward, people use more and more advanced things, but I want to say, everything that exists has its meaning. If it has its meaning, it will always be used and it will not be replaced. This may also be the reason why Chinese culture has great charm.

When I was just a little girl ,the Spring Festival was the most favourite one in my childhood. For a long time before the festival ,the whole family began to prepare .My mother would buy a lot of ingredients, such as fish, pork, mutton, beaf and etc.Of course ,what I'm most concerned about was my new clothes. My mother would take my sister's hand and go to the shopping mall with me to buy clothes.Whenever I saw beautiful clothes ,I always looked at my mother very excitedly and shouted that I wanted her to buy it.At that time, my mother always smiled and said,"Okay, this is your choice."In my childhood memory, the reasonable needs of the Spring Festival can always be well met.

On New Year's Eve,we were also very busy.At noon, we would eat dumplings and worship our ancestors. In the afternoon,we would paste Spring Festival couples. What's more,my father would prepare a lot of dishes, because the evening would be a very rich meal. Of course,as a notherner, the staple food at that night was still dumplings. On the first day of the New Year,we would go out to pay a New Year call, and we would also gain something every time. They may be some candies or some snacks, and the most anticipated thing was red packets.

As I grew up,the atmosphere of the Spring Festival became less heavy. But everyone will still be busy with the arrival of the New Year. However,in the morning,my father will still wake my sister and me up,as usual,"Two little lazy pigs,it's time to get up,or the breakfast will be could " Everything is so happy .Although many people now choose to spend the Spring Festival in the city and avoid a lot of trouble. For me, the customs of the Spring Festival are more like a kind of nostalgia, a link to connect my families and myself, which have a special meaning.

When i was a kid. My mom and dad always took me to my grandparents' house, every time we went there dad told me brought the tea to grandpa. At the beginning, I just did what dad told me to do. As time goes, I grew up, I began to wonder why we needed to bring the tea to grandparents. Does the tea have some magic? And I thought the tea was not some delicious food, it tasted bitter but dad said it was fragrant. One of the holidays we visited grandparents, dad asked me to take the tea again but I did not listen to him. When we arrived grandparents’ home, dad and mom said hello to them happily. Then dad told grandpa we brought some good tea to him. Grandpa felt delighted, however, we did not take the tea at all. Dad was angry about my behavior. Grandpa saved me, he smiled to me and asked me“Why you did not bring the tea to me, my dear?” I told my grandpa the tea was too heavy to take. Actually, the tea was not heavy, I just did not want to bring it. I could not understand the meaning in it, I thought always taking the tea is stupid. Grandpa seemed found my truly thought, but he did not expose it. Grandpa picked me up and brought me to a big table, there were some cups of tea on the table. “Are you thirsty?” grandpa asked me gently. I nodded. Grandpa gave me a cup of tea. I drunk the tea and grandpa told me the meaning of the tea. He said that in the ancient China, the tea was the symbol of amity. When friends visit our house, we always use the tea to treat them. A cup of tea shows the hospitality. A full cup of hot tea shows our respect and kindness to our friends and guests. Enjoying and tasting the tea with families or friends is our traditional custom. The tea is not only a kind of drink. It is a symbol of our culture. That time I just a little kid, I could not understand what grandpa mean, but I decided to try to enjoy the tea with dad and grandpa.

It was a midsummer night, when I was a child, my family and I went to a family dinner, Chinese restaurants often serve some cold dishes first, I sat next to my mother, looking at the prawns and beef on the table, and couldn't help but move chopsticks. At this point, my mother interrupted me and said, You have grown up, son, it is time to teach you some table manners.Although the taste of the year is fading, the blessings of my family and the sugar in my mouth have long been a seed buried in my heart, and after careful watering, it has now taken root and will eventually bear abundant fruits. With the development of The Times, more and more young people gradually ignore their ancestor worship activities, which is sad.In my opinion, it is necessary for young people to inherit traditional Chinese culture.Culture is the soul of the country.

After arriving, I couldn't wait to run to my brother. My brother is lively and lovely, see me laugh, dance, I play a lot of fun, mom and dad talk with uncle very happy. Time passed quickly, to the time for dinner, the adults got up and ready to sit, I turned around, found that the position opposite the door is very good, the field of vision, so he ran to sit on the seat, my mother saw, waved to me to let me come to the position empty out, dad and uncle mutual humility, finally uncle sat on the position, And my parents and I sat next to my uncle. After everyone was seated, I whispered to my mother, "Mom, why can't I sit in that seat?" My mother told me: Because that seat is called the upper seat, it is reserved for the host. We are guests, so we should sit in the seat next to the host. If there are grandparents coming, we will have to sit us in the top seats." I do you know what it means to be seated?

My mother then asked, and I shook my head, "The upper seat is the position farthest from the door and facing the door." When we are ready to serve, we must first ask the host to sit in the main seat, then ask the more important guests to sit, and then sit down ourselves. If you pay attention to these problems, everyone will think you are a sensible and polite good child." I noded my head and tell my mother, "Mom, I'll remember be a polite child."There are many table manners need us to study.

When I was a kid, when I lived in the old house, there was a large earth stove in the home, a huge pot inlaid in a circular hole, one of my favorite things to do when I was young was to help my grandfather boil water, watching the flame beating in the hearth, Mars splashing, very interesting, although the surface is to help, but my grandparents did not allow me to add firewood to the hearth, my grandmother said: "The stove is a guy who eats in the family, and it is blessed by the kitchen God, so don't break it." Every time I hear these words, I stop doing what I'm doing and stop playing with fire. But I was a bit of a rebellious child, I would put the red fire stick into the water to listen to it make a "zrazla" sound, but once I accidentally put a lighter into the stove, I heard a loud noise, the stove and the pot were blown out of a big hole, I was scared like a wooden stake to stay in place motionless, grandma shouted: "My dear, you are going to turn the sky upside down." Of course, I was not spared a beating that day, and it really hurt.
In our country, every year on the sixth day of the New Year to meet the kitchen God, in order to pay for the whole family will not be hungry, live a good day of eating and drinking, the most important thing to meet the kitchen God is the stove, so the elders will not let the younger generation easily close to the stove, not only in the tradition of welcoming the kitchen God, but also for safety considerations. After all, no one wants to have a big hole in the wall or pan in their home for no reason. However, with the development of The Times, the custom of welcoming the kitchen God is gradually disappearing. The development of gas stoves has squeezed the earth stoves out of the historical stage, but I will still miss the days when I baked sweet potatoes in the stove.

A Glimpse of Chinese Traditional Festival customs

Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. I still remember the excitement and anticipation I felt during this festival when I was a child.

As the night fell, my family and I would gather on the rooftop of our house, gazing up at the full moon. The moon was incredibly round and bright, casting a gentle glow on our faces. My father would point out the constellations and share stories about the moon, while my mother passed around the mooncakes, a traditional pastry filled with sweet bean or lotus seed paste.

“Look, the moon is so beautiful tonight.”my father exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement. I nodded in agreement, feeling a sense of wonder as I gazed at the moon. My mother smiled and handed me a mooncake, saying, “Enjoy the mooncake, it's a symbol of reunion and happiness.”

We would then light lanterns and set them floating into the sky, symbolizing the sending of our wishes and prayers. As the lanterns floated away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for our cultural heritage.

The Mid-Autumn Festival not only celebrated the beauty of the moon but also reinforced the importance of family and unity. It reminded us of the value of tradition and the power of storytelling.

As I grew older, I began to appreciate the significance of our traditional festivals even more. They represented our cultural identity and carried the wisdom and values of our ancestors. It is crucial that we protect and preserve these traditions, ensuring that future generations can also experience the beauty and meaning behind them.

In conclusion, traditional festivals like the Mid-Autumn Festival serve as a reminder of our cultural roots and the importance of family and unity. They carry valuable lessons and wisdom that should be cherished and passed on. Let us work together to protect and preserve our traditional festivals, ensuring that their spirit and significance continue to live on.

I was a very naughty kid a few years ago. At that time, our house had not been demolished, and I was still living in an old house in the countryside. My parents are both working in other places, and I am a child raised by a grandmother. When I was a child, I liked to visit various neighbors' houses, like the aroma of wine in the deep alleys, like to walk on the narrow road at dinner time and smell the door-to-door dinner, and like the rock sugar gourd that the pedlar shouted on the street...

Grandma was always doting me, who would have thought that one day she would make her blush.

I remember the day when I found the high threshold in front of my house to be challenging, so I stepped on the threshold and played a game. I also went to play with my grandmother excitedly. As a result, when I told my grandmother that this surprise was a small game of stepping on the threshold, my grandmother suddenly said to me angrily: “Honey, you can't do this, it's not right to do this.”

I've never seen such an angry grandma, but I still bumped into her,“What's wrong with playing a game, are you so stingy as an adult?”

Grandma was even angrier and she hit me for the first time.

Later, cautiously and curiously, I asked my grandmother, “Why can't I step on the threshold?”

My grandmother kindly said to me, “Honey, that's because it prevents the wooden threshold from being broken on the one hand, and on the other hand, it also conforms to the rules and traditions, and shows respect for the ancestors.”

My favourite festival is the Spring Festival. The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals for Chinese people. As the saying goes,“Rich or not,go home for the Chinese New Year”.So in this festival, people often follow the tradition of returning home and reuniting with family members.

And it reminds me of my childhood memories. It was the New Year’s Eve many years ago. Our family got up early that day and went to my grandpa’s home to prepare for the coming New Year’s Eve dinner together. And his house is in the country with a small yard.In the early morning,I unwillingly followed my mother to clean this small house without dust.Driven by curiosity,I stopped cleaning and asked to my mother,“Why should we clean such tidy house?”My mother replied to me with soft tone, rubbing my head, “Cleaning the house doesn’t depend on whether the house is tidy or not.It is a Spring Festival custom.”Listening my mother’s words,I nodded my head but I didn’t really understand at that time.Finishing cleaning my grandpa’s house,my mother started to make a large number of steamed buns.Every time ,these steamed buns are often served as a staple food for almost one month. Therefore I was about to vomit at the sight of them from eating too many them for a long time. I couldn’t help complaining in a low voice,“Why do you make so many steamed buns?”My mother was busy in doing her work, lowering her head all the time.So she only told me that this is also a traditional custom calmly.

On the day of Spring Festival, the first day I did after waking up was to pay a new year call to elders. My parents and grandpa reached out and gave me a big red envelope.I walked over bouncing and jumping. Then,I happily took my beloved big red envelope. As a child, all I knew was that the money in the red envelope could be used to buy things I like. But I still wondered the reasons why elders give red envelopes. From then on,I buried these doubts in my mind.

When I grow up,I learned these customs through the internet. From the internet,I know cleaning the house before the Spring Festival means that greet the departure of the old year and welcome the arrival of the new year.We don’t really sweep the dust, but sweep the bad luck.Importantly, many relatives always visit each other during the Spring Festival. So,it is necessary to carry out a thorough cleaning to welcome guests.Besides,no one sells staple food such as steamed buns during this festival because they also went home to reunite.Sending red envelopes means sending blessings and good luck.

Now,I realize that traditional custom have their own significance when preserved. I should find more hidden cultures from different traditional customs. Then learn them and spread them.
