In the 1970s, there was a prominent conflict between mushroom cultivation and forest protection as trees were used as raw materials. In 1983, Lin Zhanxi witnessed poverty and ecological problems caused by deforestation during a poverty - alleviation inspection in Changting County, Fujian. He then started researching substituting trees with grass for mushroom cultivation. Without references or proper equipment, he experimented with various wild grasses. In 1986, he successfully invented Juncao technology.

Juncao technology was invented by Lin Zhanxi, a Chinese scientist. Here are the key points:

    Background

In the 1960s–1970s, artificial cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi relied heavily on wood as a substrate, leading to severe “conflict between fungi and forests” (overexploitation of forest resources). China began researching “substituting grass for wood” to address this ecological and resource challenge.

    Invention Process

    • In 1983, Lin Zhanxi led a team to study wild herbaceous plants as alternatives to wood.
    • By 1986, they successfully developed Juncao (fungal grass) — herbaceous plants optimized as cultivation substrates for edible and medicinal fungi. They also pioneered integrated techniques for using Juncao to grow fungi, produce fungal feed, and create organic fertilizers.

    Technical Components

    • Juncao planting technology: Cultivation of specific grass species (e.g., MiscanthusPennisetum) adapted for fungal growth.
    • Fungal cultivation technology: Using Juncao as a substrate to grow over 50 species of edible/medicinal fungi (e.g., oyster mushrooms, shiitake).
    • Byproduct utilization: Converting post-fungal cultivation waste into animal feed or organic fertilizer, forming a circular ecological system.

Juncao technology was invented by Lin Zhanxi in 1986. Here is a brief introduction to its invention process:

Background: In the 1960s and 1970s, the artificial cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi such as mushrooms, auricularia auricula, and ganoderma lucidum worldwide mainly used wood as raw material. In China, the cultivation of mushrooms alone required cutting down over 10 million cubic meters of broad - leaved forests annually, resulting in serious ecological problems and the "conflict between fungi and forests". To protect forest resources and find a sustainable development path for the fungi industry that could help people out of poverty, China began research on cultivating edible and medicinal fungi with grass instead of wood.

Research and experimentation: In 1983, Lin Zhanxi led a research team to conduct research using wild herbaceous plants in western Fujian. After years of effort, in 1986, they successfully cultivated a herbaceous plant - Juncao, which could be used as a medium for cultivating edible and medicinal fungi. They also gradually developed a comprehensive technology for cultivating edible and medicinal fungi with Juncao and producing fungal feed and fertilizer.

Juncao technology was invented by Lin Zhanxi from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in the 1980s.

The invention process was as follows. In the early 1970s, inspired by the fact that cattle could eat grass while people faced starvation, Lin Zhanxi came up with the idea of cultivating edible fungi with chopped wild grass in 1971. He entered Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in 1975. Eight years later, in 1983, he started the research. By the end of 1986, he successfully grew the world's first Juncao mushroom using chopped bird's foot fern and other ingredients. After that, Lin and his team experimented with 45 different types of wild grasses and fibers, matching specific mushrooms to local ground - up grasses, adding patented ingredients, and determining temperature and other requirements. Thus, Juncao technology was born and continuously improved.

In 1983, Lin Zhanxi led a research team to start using some wild herbaceous plants in western Fujian to study the cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi using grass instead of wood. Due to the numerous difficulties in his research work and the lack of experimental facilities, Lin Zhanxi borrowed 50000 yuan from the school's engineering team to build a laboratory; If there is no inoculation needle for bacterial strains, then polish the steel wire of the bicycle at home instead; Without a grinder, I borrowed the feed grinder from the school farm to crush wild grass and fern as the culture medium. After more than 1000 days and nights of hard work, in the autumn of 1986, Lin Zhanxi cultivated the first shiitake mushroom with Mangqiong and successfully cultivated a herbaceous plant called mushroom grass, which can be used as a cultivation medium for edible and medicinal mushrooms. Gradually, he explored a comprehensive technology for using mushroom grass to cultivate edible and medicinal mushrooms and produce mushroom feed and fertilizer, giving birth to Juncao technology.

In order to solve the increasingly serious "contradiction between mushroom forests", protect the ecological environment, and help the masses get rid of poverty and become rich, in the early 80s of the 20th century, Lin Zhanxi, a young teacher, began to study the cultivation of edible fungi with grass instead of wood. After three years of experimenting with thousands of plant species, Juncao technology was finally invented in 1986.
