The dining etiquette in China differs significantly from that in the UK and the US. Chinese cuisine emphasizes sharing; during round-table meals, the host often serves dishes to guests as a sign of hospitality, with chopsticks being the primary utensils, and offering drinks or food is considered a courtesy. In contrast, the UK and the US practice individual servings, stressing personal space, where using the left hand for forks and the right hand for knives is the standard, and reaching over others directly to take something is seen as impolite. Regarding speaking habits, Chinese people believe that making sounds while eating noodles indicates enjoyment, whereas Westerners prefer quiet dining.
