1. Plague, in my view, is an acute infectious disease caused by *Yersinia pestis* that spreads mainly through fleas carried by rodents. Historically, it has led to pandemics such as the Black Death, resulting in enormous loss of life and profound social changes. If I were to define it with a metaphor, I would compare it to a "relentless shadow" because it silently follows human activities like trade and migration, adapts to changing environments, and strikes when human defenses are weak, mirroring its persistent ability to affect humanity across history. 2. Plague is indeed shaped by humans in return. Human activities such as deforestation and urbanization alter rodent habitats, potentially increasing the likelihood of transmission. Public health measures like quarantine, improved sanitation, and the use of antibiotics have constrained its spread, but issues like antibiotic resistance (often driven by overuse) or neglect of preventive measures can reshape its virulence. Additionally, globalization—from historical trade routes to modern travel—has influenced how plague spreads, as human mobility directly impacts its epidemiological patterns and the effectiveness of containment strategies.
