  • In classic British and American poetry, different poets interpret the themes of love, nature, and death in various ways. Regarding the theme of love, John Donne makes use of metaphysical conceits. For example, in "The Flea", he uses the blending of the flea's blood as a metaphor for the union of lovers. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, on the other hand, expresses her deep affection sincerely in "How Do I Love Thee?". When it comes to the theme of nature, William Wordsworth regards nature as a spiritual sustenance and fully demonstrates his reverence for it in "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud". However, Emily Dickinson's "Apparently with No Surprise" implies the tension between human beings and nature. In the face of death, Walt Whitman accepts death as a cycle of life in "Song of Myself", while Dylan Thomas urges his father to fight against death in "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night". One can't help but wonder how cultural and historical backgrounds influence the perception and presentation of these common human experiences by poets in different eras.
